Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a latté and a cappuccino?
The only real difference is the proportion of steamed milk and foam. Lattés are mostly milk, with just a bit of milk foam on top, which produces a milder coffee flavor through dilution of the espresso. Cappuccinos have less milk than a latté and more foam…thus the coffee flavor is more pronounced and if the milk is frothed properly, the foam on top is truly delicious
What the heck is a “wet cappuccino”?? Aren’t they all wet?
Yes, even a “dry” cappuccino is wet when you spill it down the front of your shirt. As it relates to cappuccinos, the terms “wet” and “dry” refer to the amount of foam in the cup. “Wet” means less foam (still more than what is normal on a latté), and “dry” signifies more foam and less milk.
How is espresso different from regular coffee?
All espresso is coffee, but not all coffee is espresso. Think of espresso as a coffee concentrate, brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through finely-ground coffee. Any coffee bean can be turned into espresso, since the term “espresso” does not refer to a specific bean or roast level, but instead to the method of brewing.
Does espresso have more caffeine than regular coffee?
Yes and no. Ounce for ounce, espresso contains two to three times the caffeine of drip-brewed coffee. But because espresso is highly-concentrated and is used as a base for drinks, (one “shot” of espresso is one ounce) the caffeine content of a 12 oz. latté will be about one-third that of a 12-ounce cup of brewed coffee.
Does a dark roast coffee have more caffeine than a light roast?
Surprisingly, no. The difference is slight, but lighter roasts actually contain more caffeine because they have spent less time in the roaster, and roasting the coffee bean does burn off some of the caffeine. Again, the difference is slight, so pick your roast based on personal preference, not on what you think might give the most buzz for the buck.
Speaking of caffeine, what WILL give me the most buzz for my buck?
